This is an Art Nouveau Sterling Silver embellished risqué` object d`art perfume flask that could also have been used as a nipper flask. This small flask measures about 3" tall x 2 1/2" wide x 1" thick. Weight is 2.9 ounces or 84 grams. The glass flask is hand blown into a mold, as demonstrated by the uneven ridges on the sides of the flask. The inside of the flask appears clear and only lightly used, with a tiny bit of white sediment at the bottom. Note the white spots visible from the back side are remnants of silver polish on the silver. The ornate filigreed Sterling silver overlay depicts a busty female with flowing hair wearing a dress, with oversized, stylized butterfly wings, surrounded by scroll work and a twisted wire at the top and sides that terminate in the back at the oval silver base. The concave oval base allows the flask to be displayed upright on a dresser and leans slightly rearward to better display the fancy Art Nouveau panel. Note that the silver scroll work at the bottom, when viewed from the back side, are not used to secure the front panel, and protrude slightly so they are more visible from the front side. The entire front panel is secured by the wire frame that secures the bottle to this wire frame. However, the bottle could have been used separately as a pocket nipper flask when removed by laying the piece face down, putting 2 fingers on each side of the wire, and using the thumbs to gently push the flask from the frame. Some men carried a small, discrete nipper flask in a vest, jacket, or pants pocket for an occasional "nip" of spirits or liquor; and some women also carried a small nipper flask in their purse for "medicinal" purposes. The base has 2 hallmarks. Both are tiny and of an unknown origin, but one clearly is marked 925 for sterling silver, and the other appears to be a maker or country of origin mark. The black top has a thin silver cover that is hallmarked, en suite, with the base. The bottle top and inside of the screw top threads show naturally occurring aging. Overall, in fine condition.
